Meet MRS. Casey Jones
Tim Garner collection
This ad from September 1943 introduces us to the PRR's version of "Rosey the Riveter." Thousands of women filled the ranks left open by employees in the military during World War II. "She is putting in a big day's work oiling and swabbing down giant engines, cleaning and vacuuming cars, handling baggage, selling tickets, moving down the aisles as a trainman." The PRR tells us the public it has 34,101 employees in the armed forces and 38 that have given their lives for their country.
