Snowbirds
Tim Garner, acrylic and opaque watercolor, 2005, 18" x 12"
This fanciful painting shows three competitors for the Chicago-to-Florida trade in 1947 leaving the snowy, cold Windy City – (front to back) "South Wind," "Dixie Flagler," and "Miami Limited". From Chicago, they left on the PRR, Chicago & Eastern Illinois, and Illinois Central respectively. From there, all three trains operated over multiple lines to reach their Florida destinations. In reality, you would not have been able to see these trains side by side. They all left town from different stations. The PRR K4s in the foreground is the locomotive fitted with Franklin poppet valves later installed on PRR's T1 4-4-4-4 duplex-drive steam locomotives.
