It's ironic that what many PRR aficionados consider the railroad's finest steam locomotive started out as a design from another railroad. The J1 and J1a classes were modeled after the Chesapeake & Ohio's T-1 class 2-10-4 Texas-types. The PRR needed more power during World War II and it built or purchased 125. These locomotives lasted right up to the end of steam on the railroad, but unfortunately none were saved.
